Polyomavirus hominis 1, better known as BK virus (BKV), infects up to 90% of the general population. However, significant clinical manifestations are rare and limited to individuals with impaired immune functions. BKV has been associated with diverse entities such as haemorrhagic cystitis, ureteric stenosis, vasculopathy, pneumonitis, encephalitis, retinitis, and even multi–organ failure.
